alunah biographySince first coming together in the English Midlands in 2006, Alunah have trafficked in a blend of the earthly and the unearthly.
Over the course of their four albums – 2010’s Call of Avernus, 2012’s White Hoarhound, 2014’s Awakening The Forest and 2017's Solennial – the four-piece have been a constant force of progression into an individualized take on psychedelic and organic heft. Their material has never lacked structure or groove, but with the melodic vocals of guitarist Sophie Day ever at the fore, they keep an eye toward the ethereal as well. That was never more true than on Awakening the Forest, which was released by Napalm Records and followed by 2015 CD reissues of the first two albums via PRC Music and a vinyl release for Call of Avernus through UK imprint HeviSike Records. As they always do, Alunah are moving forward. Sophie, guitarist David Day, bassist Daniel Burchmore and drummer Jake Mason signed to Svart Records for the March 2017 release of their fourth album, Solennial, and recorded with Chris Fielding (Conan) at Skyhammer Studio, also owned by Conan’s Jon Davis. Following in the footsteps of Svart alums Hexvessel and Jess and the Ancient Ones, Alunah arrive at the label preceded by a reputation for blending nature worship and heavy vibes with a grace that few can match, basking in a sun-soaked spirit of beauty and decay, folklore and deeply personal expression. Look for them to expand their sonic palette with the new material and build on what they’ve accomplished before in their rich, engaging sound that seems to be always wandering and never, ever lost. In November 2017 Alunah announced the addition of vocalist Siân Greenaway to their lineup, Greenaway joins Alunah after the stunning departure in September of founding vocalist/guitarist Sophie Day, who fronted the band across four full-length releases, the latest of which, Solennial, was issued earlier this year on Svart Records. In conjunction with Day’s leaving, Alunah vowed to press on, and with the arrival of Greenaway, they will look to tour in 2018 and begin writing material for their next album. - JJ (The Obelisk) "They play heavy music rooted in the tradition of Saint Vitus, but the focus isn’t so much on brute force but grace" (Decibal Magazine) "A sure-fire sign that Alunah have the potential to exist amongst the greats" (Rock-A-Rolla Magazine) "Signing to a major label has obviously given the four-piece clarity and this is their most mature release to date" (Terrorizer Magazine) "Day's vocals lead the band's charge with a regal charisma, while the songwriting is refreshingly old-school" (Zero Tolerance Magazine) upcoming alunah gigsTuesday 27th November

DECIBEL MAGAZINE (USA) "Is there a doom band that sounds dreamier than Alunah? That’s a big reason I love this English band: they play heavy music rooted in the tradition of Saint Vitus, but the focus isn’t so much on brute force but grace." ROCK-A-ROLLA MAGAZINE (UK) "A sure-fire sign that Alunah have the potential to exist amongst the greats." TERRORIZER MAGAZINE (UK) "Signing to a major label has obviously given the four-piece clarity and this is their most mature release to date." ZERO TOLERANCE MAGAZINE (UK) (4.5/5) "Day's vocals lead the band's charge with a regal charisma, while the songwriting is refreshingly old-school, bereft of any occult, retro, or stoner elements which would otherwise bog this one down as 'just another new release in the pile'. Instead, Awakening the Forest is some of the better doom metal this writer has heard in a while" METAL MOUTH (UK) (9/10) "With bands like Cathedral and Orange Goblin flying the flag for UK doom, the Birmingham 4 piece are mere footsteps behind, if not, on par with quality, they just lack the years of touring and building the name. You can rest assured that they’ll get there in the end though, especially with albums like this. Already a massive fan of Alunah, I was already aware of the brilliance that was White Hoarhound, and to say they smashed it this time around with this release is somewhat of an understatement." THE SLUDGELORD (UK) "They have a true gem in their hands and the sky is the limit for them. So, do yourself the favour and the band as well and get your hands on this amazing wax!" THE OBELISK (USA) "Whatever pagan elements might be at work throughout, Alunah‘s third album doesn’t veer from its human core, and for that, and for its marking the continued growth of the band and their coming into own in what they do, moving beyond their influences to an increasingly individualized approach, Awakening the Forest is their strongest outing yet." alunah mediaClick each image to enlarge, then right click and "save as" to save to your computer.
